Special Notices

2005 Wildflower Season Ends

With the exception of some remaining blooms at the higher elevations, the wildflower season of 2005 has drawn to a close and what a season it was! Unusually high rainfall levels last fall and winter produced what many experts called "a 100-year bloom" and record numbers of visitors came to the park in March and April to enjoy the brilliant display. While a similar show is not expected next year, there is almost always some level of wildflower bloom in Death Valley in the springtime. Early in 2006, we'll post wildflower predictions on this site, based on the rainfall levels in the valley and the opinions of the botany experts.

California Highway 190 re-opens

A ribbon cutting ceremony was held on Friday, April 29, 2006 to mark the re-opening of a 30-mile stretch Highway 190 east from Furnace Creek Inn to Death Valley Junction. Large sections of the highway were heavily damaged by flash floods in August 2004. Work on shoulders etc. will continue for several weeks and visitors should expect traffic controls in some areas, using pilot cars and flaggers. Delays of up to 30 minutes should be expected.
